Senate Unveils New Vice Presidents Amidst Legislative Leadership Transition

Phnom Penh, April 3, 2024 – In a move marking a new era of legislative leadership in Cambodia, the Senate, during its inaugural session this morning, elected its new President and Vice Presidents. Following the election of the former Prime Minister Hun Sen as President of the Senate, Prak Sokhonn has been named the First Vice President, with Ouch Borith stepping in as the Second Vice President.

Both Vice Presidents won their positions with unanimous support, each securing 62 out of 62 votes, signaling a strong consensus among the senators for the new leadership team.

Prak Sokhonn, the newly appointed First Vice President, previously served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs during the sixth mandate of the Royal Government of Cambodia. His extensive experience in foreign affairs is expected to contribute significantly to his role in the Senate, especially at a time when Cambodia seeks to strengthen its diplomatic relations and international presence.

Ouch Borith, assuming the role of Second Vice President, transitioned to this significant post following his recent departure as Senior Minister in charge of special missions on April 2, just a day before the Senate's first session. His long-standing commitment to the government and expertise in handling special missions are anticipated to bring a wealth of knowledge and strategic insight to the Senate's operations.

The election of these key figures comes at a critical juncture in Cambodian politics, as the Senate looks to navigate through a period of transformation and renewal. With a leadership team that combines vast political experience and a clear vision for the future, the Senate is poised to tackle the challenges ahead, fostering stability and guiding the nation toward continued progress and prosperity.
